What Is Meta Actually Worth? Running a $1.6 Trillion Company Through a 10-Year Model
TL;DR My midpoint fair value for Meta lands at $850–870 per share, with a low of $540–560 and a high near $1,400. At today's price, the midpoint scenario implies roughly a 12.9% annual return including dividends. These are my assumptions, not the answer.
Is Meta cheap or expensive right now?
Forward P/E of about 21. PEG below 1. Several of the sharpest investors alive are calling this stock undervalued. And yet the market has taken it down 11% over the past year. One side is wrong.
What I'm doing here isn't guessing which side. It's running the numbers myself to reverse-engineer what future has to show up for today's price to make sense.
Before starting, let me be explicit: this is not a stock recommendation. I'm showing a process, and the point is for you to apply that process to companies you know well. The goal is sleeping well at night and making better decisions.
Step 1: Establish price and enterprise value
Meta's market cap is $1.6 trillion — shares outstanding times share price, the actual price you pay.
Next I look at enterprise value, which sits at $1.68 trillion. The roughly $80 billion difference is essentially net debt.
Last year's free cash flow was nearly $50 billion. That figure will clearly shrink given the capex ramp. But even at current levels, the company could retire its entire net debt in under two years. The balance sheet is not something I'd lose sleep over.
One point I want to underline: capital expenditure is entirely the company's decision. If Meta chose to stop tomorrow, free cash flow would spike. How do I know? Because net income is far higher — $71 billion last year. The gap between $71 billion in earnings and $50 billion in free cash flow is precisely the amount being pushed into the future right now.
Step 2: Check the quality of the business
Before valuing anything, I want to know whether this company deserves a premium at all.

Here's what an 82% gross margin means in practice. For every advertising dollar that comes in, 82 cents survives as profit before overhead and taxes. A company built like that converts revenue growth into earnings growth much faster than a typical business.
Current trading multiples: 33x free cash flow, 23x earnings. Is 23x expensive? It's above the market's historical average of 15–16x. But for a top-quality business with strong growth, high gross margin and real market dominance, 23x may not be expensive at all. It depends entirely on what future growth actually looks like.
On the eight-point checklist I run, two boxes came back with an X: five-year P/E and five-year price-to-free-cash-flow. Both are valuation measures. Everything else checked out — high return on capital, a history of buying back stock when it looked cheap, five years of rising cash flow, net income and revenue, and low debt. The business passes. Only the price is in question.
Which leaves three options: wait for fundamentals to improve, wait for the price to come down, or wait for both.
Step 3: Use analyst estimates as a reference point
Analysts see earnings growing from $33 per share this year to $58 over the next five years — sustained double-digit growth.
Revenue is the more striking line. They project a rise from $258 billion to $583 billion over seven years, more than doubling, at better than 10% annually. My own read is that a company this large still hasn't fully monetized its advertising surface.
That said, analyst estimates are a starting point, not a conclusion. My model runs more conservative than they do.
Step 4: Enter the 10-year assumptions
Here is what I put in, as low / mid / high scenarios.
- Revenue growth: 7% / 10% / 14%
- Operating margin: 29% / 31% / 33%
- Free cash flow margin: 28% / 30% / 32%
- Exit multiple in year 10 (P/E and price-to-FCF): 18x / 22x / 26x
- Required rate of return: 9–10%
The exit multiple is the most contentious input. My recommendation is to ignore both the current price and the last five years of multiples, and start from the market's long-run average of 15–16x. Adjust up for a good business, down for a bad one.
Meta is clearly a good business: high return on capital, 82% gross margin, 3.5 billion daily users who genuinely like and use the products. So I assigned 18/22/26 — a fairly generous premium.
On the 9–10% required return, my reasoning is that I'm trying to find intrinsic value, not the price I personally want to pay. Required return differs by investor, and you should plug in your own. I went deeper on how price drives return in Price Determines Return.
Step 5: The output

At today's price, if every one of my mid-case assumptions plays out, the implied return is roughly 12.9% annually including dividends.
Here's how I read that. The key detail is that the low scenario sits close to where the stock trades now. In other words, today's price is in the zone where even conservative assumptions don't produce a large loss, and the mid case delivers a double-digit return. What I can't claim is a thick margin of safety.
Where the smart money stands
Numbers aren't everything, so let's look at positioning.
Bill Ackman has taken Meta to roughly 11% of his entire portfolio. Pershing Square holds more than 2.6 million shares at an average cost of $572. Ackman has publicly said Meta is absurdly undervalued and will grow over the long term. His logic is that heavy AI infrastructure investment makes the core platform more efficient and more profitable, and eventually pays off. The other structural fact: this is a founder-led company. Mark Zuckerberg still owns 13.5% of shares outstanding — over $200 billion in value. More importantly, the dual-class structure gives him control of roughly 61% of voting power. He can commit to long-horizon investment without being pushed around by short-term activists or board politics.
That cuts both ways. When the direction is right it's an enormous advantage. But if you remember the period when the stock was at $88 and people were demanding his resignation, you should weigh the downside of that same concentration.
What $88 taught me
A personal note. I bought Meta near $88 per share — as it turned out, close to the exact bottom.
I didn't buy because someone on TV said to. I sat down and did exactly what I've done in this article. At the time, people said Zuckerberg should be fired, and the fear was the metaverse. What I saw was a business that was still growing. As it turned out, the metaverse effort failed and the business got better anyway.
All I did was look at what the company earned, look at what I was paying, run the math, and conclude the market was wrong. Take the emotion out and let the numbers speak. That's the entire process.

Q: If 23x earnings is above the market average, why grant a premium at all? A: The 15–16x historical average describes an average business. Meta simultaneously posts an 82% gross margin, a five-year average ROIC of 18.6%, and 30%-plus revenue growth. Applying the same multiple would itself be the inaccurate choice. How much premium to grant is your call — my 18/22/26 assumption isn't gospel either.
Q: Rising capex cuts free cash flow. Does the model account for that? A: Yes, through the 28–32% free cash flow margin. Last year's $50 billion was a much higher share of revenue, and I deliberately marked it down for the capex ramp. It's also worth remembering that capital expenditure is a dial the company controls.
Q: Doesn't a PEG below 1 automatically mean undervalued? A: PEG is a convenient snapshot of price against growth, but it's dangerous alone. If the growth estimate in the denominator is wrong, the whole thing is wrong. I treat PEG as a signal to start looking, then make the actual judgment on 10-year cash flow assumptions.
Q: With a 12.9% mid case, should I buy now? A: That depends on your required return. If 9% is enough for you, that's comfortable headroom. If you want 15%, it isn't. Different investors reaching different conclusions from identical math is normal, not a contradiction.
